Punjab to Distribute 100,000 E-Bikes to Students Under Expanded Transport Scheme

The Punjab government has announced a major expansion of its electric bike (e-bike) program, with plans to distribute 100,000 e-bikes to students across the province over the next year.

The decision was approved during a meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz as part of the province’s broader initiative to promote environmentally friendly transportation.

Under the expanded scheme, the government will provide a subsidy of Rs. 70,000 for each e-bike to make the vehicles more affordable for eligible students.

According to the announced plan, male students will be required to make a down payment of Rs. 14,000, while the remaining amount can be paid through interest-free monthly installments of Rs. 2,100.

Women students will receive additional financial support under the program. The Punjab government will cover both the down payment and registration fee, meaning beneficiaries will only need to pay the interest-free monthly installment of Rs. 2,100.

The chief minister also directed the relevant departments to introduce more flexible installment options to encourage greater participation in the scheme.

In addition to students, the government has decided to extend the facility to government employees, who will also be able to purchase electric bikes through easy installment plans.

The e-bike initiative is part of Punjab’s wider green transport strategy, which includes expanding electric buses, electric taxis, and electric three-wheelers across the province. Officials also reviewed the progress of ongoing mass transit projects and plans to further strengthen environmentally friendly public transportation in Punjab.
