Millions Attend Funeral Procession for Iran’s Late Supreme Leader in Tehran
Tehran, July 6, 2026: Large crowds gathered in Iran’s capital on Monday as the funeral procession for the country’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei began following two days of public mourning.
Authorities estimated that millions of people participated in the procession, although an official attendance figure had not been released at the time of reporting.
Funeral Procession Begins in Tehran
The funeral procession started after the late leader’s body had lain in state for two days at Tehran’s Grand Mosalla religious complex.
Images from the event showed large numbers of mourners lining major streets across the capital as the coffin moved through the city. Many participants carried Iranian flags, offered prayers, and paid their final respects during the procession.
Officials also implemented extensive security and crowd management measures during the event.
National Mourning Continues
Iranian authorities announced a series of funeral ceremonies that will continue over several days.
Following the procession in Tehran:
- Tuesday: Funeral events are scheduled in Qom.
- Wednesday: Memorial ceremonies will be held in the Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala.
- Thursday: The late leader is expected to be buried in Mashhad, his hometown in northeastern Iran.
Senior Officials Attend Ceremony
Several senior Iranian officials attended the funeral events, including former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, members of the country’s parliament, military leaders, and other government representatives.
Three of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s sons were also seen at the ceremonies.
Regional Tensions Remain in Focus
The funeral comes amid ongoing regional tensions following recent military developments in the Middle East.
Iranian leaders have continued to emphasize national unity during the mourning period, while officials have reiterated their positions on regional security and foreign policy.
