Punjab Sets Aside Rs. 40 Billion to Expand Electric Bus Charging Network
LAHORE: The Punjab government has allocated Rs. 40 billion in the current fiscal year to develop charging infrastructure for its growing electric bus fleet as part of its plan to expand environmentally friendly public transport across the province.
According to provincial officials, the investment will support the installation and expansion of charging facilities required for the increasing number of electric buses expected to operate in Punjab.
Charging Infrastructure to Be Developed in Phases
Bilal Akbar Khan said the charging network will be developed in multiple phases.
Until the dedicated infrastructure is fully operational, newly introduced electric buses will be charged using electricity supplied through the national power grid.
The government aims to build a long-term charging system capable of supporting the continued expansion of electric public transportation.
Electric Bus Service Expanding to More Districts
After launching electric bus services in major cities, the Punjab government is extending the project to smaller districts.
In the first phase, electric buses will begin operating on 13 routes across:
- Khanewal
- Khushab
- Bhakkar
- Attock
- Mandi Bahauddin
- Hafizabad
Additional electric buses are also planned for districts including Chiniot, Layyah, Okara, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Multan, Murree, Gujrat, Sheikhupura, Vehari, Kasur, Lodhran, Nankana Sahib, and Narowal.
More Electric Buses Expected
Officials expect hundreds of additional electric buses to arrive by the end of August 2026, with deployment planned across multiple districts in phases.
The expansion is part of the provincial government’s broader strategy to modernize public transportation and promote cleaner, low-emission travel.
Focus on Sustainable Public Transport
Punjab currently operates 400 electric buses across 18 districts, with plans to expand the fleet to 1,900 buses during 2026.
