Typhoon Maysak Causes Flooding in Southern China, Two Reported Dead

Typhoon Maysak has caused widespread flooding in southern China, with authorities confirming two fatalities and ordering the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents as heavy rainfall continues to affect the region.

The storm, which moved across Vietnam and China’s Hainan Province over the weekend, weakened after making landfall but continued to bring significant rainfall to inland areas.

According to local authorities, the city of Nanning, the capital of Guangxi, has been among the hardest-hit areas. More than 55,000 people have been affected by flooding, while approximately 48,000 residents were evacuated as a precaution.

Officials also reported that water levels exceeded safety limits at several reservoirs, prompting authorities to activate the highest level of flood emergency response in the region. Rescue and relief operations are continuing as heavy rainfall is expected to persist.

In the nearby city of Guigang, floodwaters submerged roads and vehicles, while other parts of Guangxi also experienced severe flooding and disruptions caused by rising water levels.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall in northern China has also resulted in additional casualties, with local reports indicating several weather-related deaths in recent days.

Weather agencies are also closely monitoring Super Typhoon Bavi, which is moving across the Pacific Ocean and could bring strong winds and heavy rain to parts of eastern China later this week.

Meteorological officials have forecast continued rainfall across Guangxi, Guizhou, Hunan, and neighboring regions over the coming days, urging residents in vulnerable areas to stay updated through official weather advisories and follow instructions from local authorities.

Experts note that extreme weather events continue to pose increasing challenges to infrastructure, agriculture, and transportation, highlighting the importance of disaster preparedness and timely emergency response.
