US Approves Nearly $2 Billion Arms Package for Saudi Arabia

The United States has approved a proposed weapons package worth approximately $1.96 billion for Saudi Arabia, aiming to strengthen the kingdom’s air defense capabilities amid rising regional security concerns.

According to the US State Department, the proposed sale supports Washington’s foreign policy and security objectives by enhancing the defense capabilities of Saudi Arabia, a key non-NATO partner in the Gulf region.

The package includes up to 20,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon Systems (APKWS) along with related equipment and support. The primary contractor for the deal is expected to be BAE Systems, based in New Jersey.

US officials said the proposed sale is intended to improve Saudi Arabia’s ability to address current and future security challenges while increasing operational cooperation with US and allied forces.

The announcement comes during a period of heightened tensions in the Middle East. Recent cross-border military activity involving Saudi Arabia, Yemen’s Houthi movement, and Iran has contributed to growing regional instability.

Earlier this week, reports indicated missile strikes targeting Saudi Arabia’s southern region, while developments in Yemen and broader regional conflicts have continued to raise international concern.

The US State Department emphasized that the proposed arms sale is not expected to affect the readiness of American military forces.

The proposed transaction will undergo the required congressional review process before it can be finalized under US arms export procedures.
