Real Betis Come From Behind to Beat Villarreal and Move Third in La Liga

Real Betis climbed to third place in La Liga after securing a 2-1 comeback victory over Villarreal on Monday.
The result extended Villarreal’s difficult start to the league campaign, with the club still without a win after five matches. The defeat also left Villarreal in 18th position, while the team has also suffered a loss in its Champions League campaign.
Villarreal Take Early Lead
Villarreal started strongly and created several opportunities during the opening half.
Goalkeeper Alvaro Valles produced an important save to divert Santi Comesana’s effort onto the post, while Villarreal also saw goals from Gerard Moreno and Tajon Buchanan ruled out for offside.
The home side eventually broke the deadlock in the 29th minute. Buchanan headed the ball back into the danger area, allowing Moreno to finish from close range.
Betis Turn the Game Around
Real Betis responded quickly and scored twice within four minutes before half-time.
Cucho Hernandez brought Betis level after goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi saved Ez Abde’s initial attempt. Hernandez reacted quickest to the rebound and made no mistake from close range.
Betis then completed the turnaround through Natan Bernardo de Souza. After a corner was headed towards goal, Gulacsi was unable to keep hold of the ball, allowing Natan to score from close range.
Betis went into the interval with a 2-1 advantage despite Villarreal having created more opportunities earlier in the match.
Betis Miss Chances to Extend Lead
Manuel Pellegrini’s side had several opportunities to put the result beyond doubt after the break.
Hernandez saw an effort blocked while in a promising position, while Pablo Fornals was unable to control the ball after finding himself with a clear opportunity.
Gulacsi later made important saves to deny Nelson Deossa and Antony, keeping Villarreal within touching distance.
However, Betis managed to hold on for all three points.
La Liga Standings
The victory moved Real Betis level on points with Real Madrid, although Madrid remain ahead of them in the standings.
Defending champions Barcelona continue to lead La Liga after winning all five of their matches so far.
For Villarreal, the result adds to a disappointing opening to the season. The club will now look to secure its first league victory and climb out of the relegation zone.
Betis, meanwhile, will aim to maintain their strong start as they continue their challenge near the top of the table.
