HIV Cases Among Children at Karachi’s Valika Hospital Rise to 94

The number of children diagnosed with HIV in connection with the Sindh Employees’ Social Security Institution (SESSI)-run Kulsoom Bai Valika Hospital has increased to 94, according to information presented during a hearing before the Sindh Ombudsman.

Officials informed the hearing that 16 additional children had recently tested positive, raising the total from the previously confirmed 78 cases.

Ombudsman Orders Hospital Audit

During the proceedings, Sindh Ombudsman Mohammad Sohail Rajput directed the authorities to arrange a comprehensive independent audit of the hospital’s administrative and financial affairs.

The ombudsman also instructed officials to identify a reputable audit firm within two weeks to carry out the review.

Families Raise Concerns

Parents of the affected children attended the hearing and shared concerns regarding the availability of medicines, treatment support, and delays in the reimbursement of medical expenses.

Hospital officials assured the ombudsman that the newly reported cases would be reviewed and that the concerns raised by families would be addressed.

Measures to Improve Patient Care

The ombudsman directed the hospital administration to ensure the continuous availability of medicines, nutritional supplements, and other essential medical supplies for affected children.

He also instructed the hospital to establish a help desk near the main entrance to assist patients and their families with information and support.

To strengthen healthcare services, officials were advised to arrange the temporary deputation of experienced doctors from the Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital for a period of six months.

Support for Affected Families

The ombudsman further directed the relevant authorities to:

• Provide psychological support for affected children and their families.
• Consider assistance for workers who lost their jobs while caring for their children during treatment.
• Ensure appropriate compensation for families of deceased children in accordance with applicable government policies.
• Continue rehabilitation and long-term medical support for children living with HIV.

Next Hearing Scheduled

The hearing was adjourned for two weeks, during which authorities are expected to submit progress on the implementation of the ombudsman’s directives and report on the latest developments.

Health officials continue to monitor the situation, while the government has stated that efforts are underway to improve patient care and strengthen hospital oversight.
