Pakistan Purchases Seven Spot LNG Cargoes Amid Higher Global Energy Prices
Pakistan has purchased seven spot liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes in recent weeks as the country works to maintain energy supplies during the peak summer electricity demand period.
According to data shared by Arif Habib Limited, five of these cargoes arrived in July 2026, with purchase prices increasing as international LNG markets remained elevated.
LNG Prices Trend Higher
The latest spot LNG cargo, expected to arrive in late July, was reportedly purchased at $21.88 per million British thermal units (mmbtu), making it the highest-priced spot cargo among the recent purchases.
Data indicates that the average price of the seven spot cargoes was approximately $18.72 per mmbtu.
Higher Fuel Costs
Analysts noted that rising LNG prices have increased the estimated cost of electricity generation from imported spot LNG.
The increase reflects higher international fuel prices, which have remained elevated due to uncertainty in global energy markets.
Spot Imports Support Energy Demand
Pakistan turned to spot LNG purchases to help ensure sufficient fuel supplies during the period of increased electricity demand in the summer season.
Spot market purchases provide additional flexibility when needed, although they are generally more expensive than supplies secured through long-term contracts.
Comparison With Long-Term Contracts
According to estimates cited by Arif Habib Limited, a spot LNG cargo costs significantly more than cargoes imported under Pakistan’s long-term LNG agreement.
The comparison highlights the price difference between purchasing LNG on the international spot market and importing fuel through existing long-term supply arrangements.
Energy experts note that global LNG prices continue to be influenced by international market conditions, supply-demand dynamics, and broader developments in the global energy sector.
