SVNS World Championship 2027 Schedule Announced as Rugby Sevens Begins LA28 Olympic Qualification

World Rugby has announced the schedule for the 2027 SVNS World Championship, which will serve as the first major qualification pathway for rugby sevens at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games (LA28).
The championship will feature three major SVNS events across different countries, where teams will compete for Olympic qualification spots.
Three Events to Decide Olympic Qualification
The 2027 SVNS World Championship will include tournaments in:
- Hong Kong, China: April 9–11, 2027
- Valladolid, Spain: May 21–23, 2027
- Bordeaux, France: May 28–30, 2027
Following these three competitions, teams will be ranked based on their overall performances. The final standings will determine which teams earn qualification places for the LA28 Olympic Games.
Four Olympic Spots Available for Each Gender
According to World Rugby, the SVNS World Championship will provide four Olympic qualification places for men’s teams and four for women’s teams.
At the LA28 Olympics, rugby sevens will feature two separate competitions:
- Men’s rugby sevens tournament
- Women’s rugby sevens tournament
Each event will include 12 teams competing for the gold medal.
Rugby Sevens’ Olympic History
Rugby sevens has been part of the Olympic Games since Rio 2016.
In the men’s competition, Fiji won the first two Olympic gold medals before France claimed the title at the Paris 2024 Games.
In women’s rugby sevens, Australia won the first Olympic championship, while New Zealand secured gold medals in the following two editions.
The 2027 SVNS World Championship is expected to play a key role in shaping the teams that will compete on rugby sevens’ biggest stage at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
