Litton Das Appointed Bangladesh’s New ODI Captain Ahead of World Cup

DHAKA: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das as the new captain of the national One-Day International (ODI) team, replacing Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
The leadership change comes as Bangladesh prepares for the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup, with the board adopting separate captains for white-ball and red-ball cricket. Litton Das, who already leads the T20I side, will now take charge of the ODI team, while Najmul Hossain Shanto will continue as the Test captain.
BCB President Tamim Iqbal said the decision reflects the board’s long-term strategy of having dedicated leaders for different formats of the game.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz was appointed ODI captain in June last year and led Bangladesh in 20 ODIs, recording 10 victories during his tenure. After a difficult start, the team bounced back with successful home series against the West Indies, Pakistan, New Zealand, and Australia, before recently losing an away series to Zimbabwe.
Tamim praised Mehidy’s contribution to the team and emphasized that his role as a player remains highly important. He added that discussions with Mehidy were positive and that the all-rounder understood the reasoning behind the leadership change.
Litton Das brings previous captaincy experience, having led Bangladesh in seven ODI matches, including a memorable series victory over India in 2022.
Meanwhile, Tamim also expressed optimism regarding Bangladesh’s proposed home series against India later this year. He said discussions between the Bangladesh Cricket Board and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have been encouraging, and a final decision is expected soon.
The upcoming leadership transition is expected to help Bangladesh strengthen its preparations for major international tournaments while maintaining stability across all formats of the game.
