IBM and NASA Launch AI Model to Map Ice and Craters on the Moon

Washington: IBM and NASA have introduced a new open-source artificial intelligence model designed to help scientists analyse lunar data and better understand the surface of the Moon.

The NASA-IBM Lunar Foundation Model is intended to support research into the Moon’s geology, surface features and potential resources as space agencies prepare for longer-term human missions.

AI Model Trained on Lunar Data

According to NASA and IBM, the model was trained using more than 30 layers of data collected by nine scientific instruments across four NASA missions.

One of the major sources of information is NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, which has been studying the Moon for years.

The new model is part of IBM and NASA’s broader Prithvi family of open foundation models, which also includes AI systems developed for areas such as geospatial analysis and weather research.

Helping Scientists Study the Moon

The AI system could assist researchers in identifying possible ice deposits in permanently shadowed regions of the Moon.

It may also help scientists map lunar craters, identify areas that could potentially be suitable for future spacecraft landings and analyse volcanic features on the lunar surface.

Many of these tasks have traditionally required researchers to manually examine large volumes of maps and imagery. The new AI model could help speed up this process and provide more detailed analysis.

Improved Accuracy in Tests

NASA and IBM said the model performed strongly in benchmark testing.

According to the organisations, it identified important features on the lunar surface with up to 23% greater accuracy than commonly used existing methods.

The open-source nature of the model is also expected to give researchers and other users an opportunity to study and develop new applications based on lunar data.

Why Lunar Ice Matters

Scientists are particularly interested in finding water ice on the Moon because it could become an important resource for future exploration.

Water can potentially be processed to provide oxygen for life support and hydrogen and oxygen for rocket propellant. This could reduce the amount of supplies that future missions would need to transport from Earth.

Identifying accessible ice deposits could therefore play an important role in planning a future sustained human presence on the Moon.

Supporting Future Lunar Missions

NASA’s Artemis program aims to return astronauts to the Moon as part of a broader effort to establish a more sustained human presence and develop technologies that could eventually support missions to Mars.

The new AI model is expected to provide scientists with another tool for analysing lunar environments and identifying locations and resources that could be important for future exploration.

As lunar exploration expands, AI-based analysis could help researchers process the growing amount of data being collected by spacecraft and scientific instruments around the Moon.
