New Zealand Cricket defends decision to launch new domestic T20 league

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has defended its decision to introduce a new domestic T20 competition, saying the board reviewed several expert assessments before selecting the new tournament over the option of joining Australia’s Big Bash League.

The governing body announced in March that the six-team NZ20 competition would replace the existing Super Smash provincial tournament. The decision has faced criticism from former players and officials over the way the process was handled.

Cricket legend Richard Hadlee and former NZC president Lesley Murdoch questioned the lack of transparency and criticised the board for not making a Deloitte report available to stakeholders.

NZC chair Diana Puketapu-Lyndon acknowledged that the organisation could have communicated its decision more clearly when the plans were first announced.

She said the Deloitte assessment was only one of four expert reports considered by the board. Other reviews examined community cricket, player development and high-performance pathways, as well as fan engagement.

According to Puketapu-Lyndon, the Deloitte report recommended further consideration of a potential move into Australia’s Big Bash League because of possible financial benefits and governance opportunities. However, the report also left the final decision to the NZC board and encouraged it to continue assessing both options.

NZC also considered views from the country’s six Major Associations and the New Zealand Cricket Players Association. Both groups supported the proposed NZ20 model instead of pursuing a place for a New Zealand franchise in the established Australian competition.

After reviewing the reports, stakeholder feedback and its own assessment, the NZC board unanimously voted 7-0 in favour of NZ20.

The governing body said it would not publish the complete Deloitte report because of confidentiality concerns.

Puketapu-Lyndon described NZ20 as a major change for domestic cricket in New Zealand and acknowledged that the decision would not satisfy everyone.

The tournament was originally expected to begin this summer, but NZC has postponed its launch until the 2027-28 home season. The delay is intended to give organisers more time to establish the privately owned franchise competition while also working around New Zealand’s international cricket schedule.

NZC believes the new league can strengthen the domestic game and create a more sustainable pathway for players from grassroots cricket through to the international level.
