Canada Held to 1–1 Draw by Ireland in Final World Cup Warm-Up
Canada finished its final preparation match ahead of the World Cup with a 1–1 draw against Ireland in Montreal on Friday night.
Match Summary
Canada took the lead in the 24th minute through an own goal by Ireland defender Jake O’Brien, following a corner kick from Stephen Eustáquio.
Ireland equalized in the second half when Chiedozie Ogbene converted from close range after a penalty situation. Canada goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau initially saved the penalty attempt, but Ogbene scored on the rebound in the 60th minute.
Key Moments
Ireland came close to taking the lead later in the match, but Crépeau made an important save in the 85th minute to keep the score level. He finished the match with two saves.
Earlier in the day, Canada forward Cyle Larin signed a two-year contract with Southampton.
World Cup Preparation
Canada had earlier defeated Uzbekistan 2–0 in Edmonton and continues its preparation for the upcoming tournament.
The team will begin its World Cup campaign on June 12 in Toronto against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Group B. They will also face Qatar in Vancouver on June 18 and Switzerland on June 24.
