Canada Reach FIFA World Cup Last 16 with Dramatic Win Over South Africa

Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail

Canada booked a historic place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after defeating South Africa 1-0 in stoppage time during their knockout clash on Sunday.

Midfielder Stephen Eustaquio scored the decisive goal deep into added time, helping the tournament co-hosts secure their first-ever victory in the World Cup knockout stage. The dramatic finish ended South Africa’s impressive campaign and sent Canada into the next round.

The tightly contested match looked destined for extra time as both teams struggled to find the breakthrough. However, Canada produced one final attacking move in stoppage time.

Jacob Shaffelburg delivered a cross from the right that was only partially cleared by the South African defense. The loose ball fell to Eustaquio, who controlled it before firing a powerful shot into the bottom corner to spark celebrations among Canadian players and supporters.

Canada will now face either the Netherlands or Morocco in the Round of 16, with the match scheduled to take place in Houston on July 4.

Despite missing injured star Alphonso Davies from the starting lineup, Canada controlled much of the game. Davies, recovering from a hamstring injury, was introduced in the second half and immediately added pace and creativity to the attack.

Canada created several scoring opportunities throughout the match. Derek Cornelius headed over from a well-delivered free kick in the first half, while Moise Bombito and Tajon Buchanan also came close before halftime.

South Africa defended with discipline and looked dangerous on counterattacks. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams produced several important saves to keep his side in the contest, while defenders made crucial clearances to deny Canadian forwards.

After coming on as a substitute, Davies helped create multiple chances for Jonathan David and Promise David, but South Africa’s defense continued to hold firm until the closing moments.

Eustaquio’s late strike ultimately proved to be the difference, giving Canada a memorable victory and extending their World Cup journey, while South Africa exited the tournament after a determined performance.
