Congo Reports Sharp Rise in Ebola Cases as Outbreak Expands
Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo have reported a significant increase in Ebola cases, just one month after the latest outbreak was officially declared.
According to the country’s Ministry of Health, 72 new cases were recorded within a 24-hour period, bringing the total confirmed cases to 782. Officials also reported 29 additional deaths, raising the confirmed death toll to 181.
Rising Cases and Ongoing Surveillance
The ministry stated that the increase in reported cases reflects both the rapid spread of the virus and improved disease surveillance efforts across affected areas.
Health teams are continuing to investigate suspected cases, while community members are also being encouraged to report symptoms early.
Outbreak Challenges
Officials noted that the actual number of infections may be higher, as the outbreak likely began weeks before it was formally identified on May 15.
The current outbreak is linked to the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which was not initially tested for during early screening efforts. Unlike other strains, this variant has fewer available treatment options.
Contact Tracing Efforts
Authorities reported that contact tracing coverage has dropped to 56%, a decline from the previous week. Health officials are working to identify and monitor individuals who may have been exposed to help contain further spread.
