Czech Republic Defeat Ukraine to Win Billie Jean King Cup

SHENZHEN: The Czech Republic secured the Billie Jean King Cup title after defeating Ukraine 2-0 in the final in Shenzhen on Sunday.

Karolina Muchova and Linda Noskova won their respective singles matches in straight sets to give the Czech team a comfortable victory and their first BJK Cup title since 2018.

Muchova put the Czech Republic ahead by beating Anhelina Kalinina 6-2, 6-3 in the opening match.

Noskova then completed the victory with a 6-3, 7-6 (7/5) win over Ukraine’s world number seven Elina Svitolina.

The triumph gave the Czech Republic their 12th Billie Jean King Cup title, further strengthening their record in the prestigious women’s team competition.

Noskova and Muchova have also enjoyed a notable season on the individual circuit. Earlier this year, they made history by meeting in an all-Czech Wimbledon final.

Czech captain Barbora Strycova also achieved a personal milestone with the team’s victory. The former player, who has six BJK Cup titles to her name, was part of the Czech side that defeated the United States in the 2018 final.

Strycova has now joined an exclusive group of women who have won the competition both as a player and as a captain. The group also includes Margaret Court, Chris Evert and Billie Jean King.

For Ukraine, the final represented a historic moment as the team reached the BJK Cup final for the first time.

Ukraine had earned its place in the championship match after eliminating defending champions Italy in the previous round.
