Fakhar Zaman Likely to Regain Fitness Before Asia Cup in UAE

(Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail)
Fakhar Zaman’s Recovery Boosts Pakistan Ahead of Asia Cup 2025

Pakistan’s top-order batting may soon receive a timely boost, with experienced opener Fakhar Zaman expected to recover from a minor hamstring injury in time for the Asia Cup 2025, set to begin next month in the UAE.

According to sources close to the 34-year-old, the injury—sustained during the second T20I against West Indies in Lauderhill—is not serious. Fakhar is believed to need only 10 to 15 days of rest, followed by rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore.

Minor Setback, Quick Recovery

“Fakhar is already en route home from Dubai after flying back from the U.S.,” a source told Nukta. “He has assured that the injury isn’t serious and expects to return soon.”

Due to the setback, Fakhar missed the third T20I and will also sit out the ODI series against West Indies, which begins tonight. However, if his recovery stays on track, he could be available for Pakistan’s Asia Cup opener against Oman on September 12.

Strategic Depth for Pakistan’s Batting Order

Pakistan’s current opening pair—Saim Ayub and Sahibzada Farhan—have shown promise, which may allow the team management to give Fakhar additional time to regain full fitness before crucial fixtures, including the high-profile Pakistan vs. India match on September 14 in Dubai.

Fakhar was in good form before the injury, scoring 28 off 24 and 20 off 19 in the first two T20Is against West Indies. His experience on the spin-friendly tracks of the UAE could prove vital during the tournament.

Asia Cup Format and Fixtures

The Asia Cup 2025, starting September 9, features eight teams split into two groups:

  • Group A: Pakistan, India, UAE, Oman

  • Group B: Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Afghanistan

The return of Fakhar Zaman could enhance Pakistan’s title hopes, as the team looks to lift the trophy in what promises to be a highly competitive tournament.

Cricket West Indies Calls Emergency Meeting to Revive Test Cricket Legacy Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced an emergency strategic intervention following a challenging Test series against Australia, aimed at revitalizing the team’s long-format performance. In response to the recent series defeat, CWI President Kishore Shallow has convened a special meeting of the Cricket Strategy and Officiating Committee. To provide expert insight and guidance, he has invited three of the region’s most celebrated cricket legends—Sir Clive Lloyd, Sir Vivian Richards, and Brian Lara—to join the discussions. These icons will collaborate with existing committee members Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Desmond Haynes, and Ian Bradshaw. “To strengthen the discussions, I have extended invitations to three of our greatest batsmen ever: Sir Clive Lloyd, Sir Vivian Richards, and Brian Lara,” Shallow said in a recent statement. Together, the trio brings decades of experience and nearly 28,000 Test runs. Their involvement is intended to offer both inspiration and practical solutions to help guide the next chapter of West Indies cricket. “This engagement is not ceremonial. These are men who helped define our golden eras,” Shallow explained. “Their perspectives will be invaluable as we shape the next phase of our cricket development. We intend for this gathering to result in tangible, actionable recommendations.” While the recent series outcome has prompted reflection within the cricketing community, CWI emphasized the importance of maintaining a forward-looking approach. The board remains committed to long-term planning and rebuilding a strong, competitive Test team. West Indies cricket has seen significant success in the T20 format, but the rise of shorter formats has presented challenges for the traditional Test arena. CWI hopes that renewed focus and expert input will help bridge this gap and encourage greater interest and preparation for red-ball cricket. The strategic meeting is expected to produce a roadmap focused on resilience, performance development, and fostering a renewed culture of excellence. With leadership from some of the game’s greatest Caribbean players, West Indies cricket aims to build a future rooted in its proud and storied legacy
