FIFA Suspends Balogun’s Match Ban, Making Him Eligible for USA’s World Cup Clash with Belgium

FIFA Suspends Balogun’s Match Ban, Making Him Eligible for USA’s World Cup Clash with Belgium

Published: July 6, 2026

FIFA has announced that United States forward Folarin Balogun will be available for his team’s FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match against Belgium after temporarily suspending the automatic one-match ban that followed his recent red card.

The decision has attracted widespread attention ahead of one of the tournament’s most anticipated knockout matches.

Balogun Cleared to Play

Balogun received a red card during the United States’ 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina after a VAR review.

Under normal tournament regulations, a direct red card results in an automatic suspension for the following match. However, FIFA confirmed that the implementation of the suspension has been placed on hold under provisions of its disciplinary regulations.

According to FIFA, the suspension has been deferred for a one-year probationary period. If Balogun commits a similar disciplinary offence during that period, the suspended sanction could be enforced in addition to any new disciplinary action.

FIFA Explains Decision

In its statement, FIFA said the decision was made in accordance with the FIFA Disciplinary Code, which allows the disciplinary body, in certain circumstances, to suspend the implementation of a sanction.

The governing body did not provide additional details regarding the specific factors considered in reaching its decision.

Reports of Political Contact

Multiple media reports stated that U.S. President Donald Trump discussed Balogun’s case with FIFA President Gianni Infantino before the announcement.

However, FIFA did not publicly comment on those reports, and no official explanation was issued regarding whether any external discussions influenced the disciplinary decision.

Reactions from the United States

United States head coach Mauricio Pochettino welcomed the decision, maintaining that the original red card did not warrant a one-match suspension.

Several U.S. players said they learned of the decision shortly before training, expressing surprise before welcoming the news ahead of the knockout fixture.

Belgium Raises Questions

The Royal Belgian Football Association expressed concern over the ruling, saying it was reviewing FIFA’s interpretation of the disciplinary regulations.

Belgian officials pointed to tournament rules that generally require an automatic suspension following a direct red card and said they were examining the decision in light of the competition’s regulations.

Focus Shifts to Round of 16

With Balogun now eligible for selection, attention turns to the United States’ meeting with Belgium in the Round of 16.

The match is expected to be one of the standout fixtures of the knockout stage, while FIFA’s disciplinary decision is likely to remain a major talking point throughout the tournament.
