Pakistan Hockey Team’s Silver at FIH Nations Cup Seen as Positive Turning Point

Lahore: Pakistan’s hockey captain Ammad Butt has called the team’s recent silver medal win at the FIH Nations Cup a promising sign for the sport’s revival in the country, despite a 6–2 defeat to New Zealand in the final held on June 21 in Kuala Lumpur.

The tournament marked Pakistan’s return to a major international final for the first time since the 2014 Champions Trophy in Bhubaneswar — an achievement that has brought renewed optimism to the national hockey scene.

A Milestone, Not a Setback

Speaking at Allama Iqbal International Airport upon the team’s return, Ammad Butt highlighted the significance of the achievement.

Ammad praised his teammates and coaching staff for their dedication and resilience throughout the tournament, saying their performance demonstrated strong potential for the future of Pakistani hockey.

Absence of Official Reception Disappoints Players

Despite the achievement, the team was left disappointed by the absence of any government representatives at the airport to receive them. Ammad described the lack of official acknowledgment as “disheartening”, especially after the team’s hard-fought journey to the final.

Coach Tahir Zaman Calls for More Support

Head coach Tahir Zaman, a former Olympian, echoed the captain’s remarks and identified the lack of international exposure as a key factor behind the loss to New Zealand.

Tahir, however, commended the players’ progress and noted an improvement in Pakistan’s FIH world ranking as a result of their Nations Cup performance. He also emphasized the need for consistent financial and administrative support.

Key Takeaways:

  • Pakistan finished runners-up at the FIH Nations Cup 2024 after a strong campaign.

  • It was their first appearance in a major international final in over a decade.

  • Captain Ammad Butt and coach Tahir Zaman called for greater institutional support.

  • The team’s world ranking has improved, signaling progress and potential.

The silver medal has renewed hopes for a revival of field hockey in Pakistan, once considered a powerhouse of the sport. With continued support and investment, players and coaches believe a brighter future lies ahead for Pakistan hockey.

Cricket West Indies Calls Emergency Meeting to Revive Test Cricket Legacy Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced an emergency strategic intervention following a challenging Test series against Australia, aimed at revitalizing the team’s long-format performance. In response to the recent series defeat, CWI President Kishore Shallow has convened a special meeting of the Cricket Strategy and Officiating Committee. To provide expert insight and guidance, he has invited three of the region’s most celebrated cricket legends—Sir Clive Lloyd, Sir Vivian Richards, and Brian Lara—to join the discussions. These icons will collaborate with existing committee members Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Desmond Haynes, and Ian Bradshaw. “To strengthen the discussions, I have extended invitations to three of our greatest batsmen ever: Sir Clive Lloyd, Sir Vivian Richards, and Brian Lara,” Shallow said in a recent statement. Together, the trio brings decades of experience and nearly 28,000 Test runs. Their involvement is intended to offer both inspiration and practical solutions to help guide the next chapter of West Indies cricket. “This engagement is not ceremonial. These are men who helped define our golden eras,” Shallow explained. “Their perspectives will be invaluable as we shape the next phase of our cricket development. We intend for this gathering to result in tangible, actionable recommendations.” While the recent series outcome has prompted reflection within the cricketing community, CWI emphasized the importance of maintaining a forward-looking approach. The board remains committed to long-term planning and rebuilding a strong, competitive Test team. West Indies cricket has seen significant success in the T20 format, but the rise of shorter formats has presented challenges for the traditional Test arena. CWI hopes that renewed focus and expert input will help bridge this gap and encourage greater interest and preparation for red-ball cricket. The strategic meeting is expected to produce a roadmap focused on resilience, performance development, and fostering a renewed culture of excellence. With leadership from some of the game’s greatest Caribbean players, West Indies cricket aims to build a future rooted in its proud and storied legacy
