Hundreds of Flights Cancelled as Typhoon Dujuan Approaches Japan

At least 275 flights were cancelled across Japan on Monday as Typhoon Dujuan moved closer to Tokyo, bringing strong winds and warnings of potentially record-breaking rainfall.

The approaching storm also caused power outages, disrupted transport services and led to the early cancellation of several major events in and around the Japanese capital.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) warned that rainfall and wind conditions could become more severe before the typhoon reaches the region. Officials said accumulated rainfall through Tuesday could exceed the average rainfall normally recorded during the entire month of September.

Typhoon Dujuan was generating winds of around 144 kilometres per hour as it passed approximately 110 kilometres from Hachijojima, one of Tokyo’s remote islands.

More than 4,000 households in neighbouring Chiba were without electricity on Monday. Authorities also urged residents to remain alert for heavy rain, flooding and possible landslides.

Japan Airlines cancelled 120 domestic and 15 international flights, while All Nippon Airways cancelled 140 domestic flights. Some railway services in Tokyo and nearby areas were also suspended because of the storm.

The weather disruption affected several scheduled events as well. Tokyo Game Show, a major international video game exhibition that began on Thursday, was cancelled on its final day.

A large outdoor music festival and a baseball game scheduled in Chiba were also called off due to the expected weather conditions.
