Iran and New Zealand Set for Key FIFA World Cup Group G Opener
Iran and New Zealand will begin their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaigns on Monday when they meet in a crucial Group G fixture in Los Angeles.
The match marks the first-ever World Cup meeting between the two nations and offers both teams an important opportunity to start the tournament on a positive note.
Iran enter the competition appearing in their fourth consecutive World Cup and seventh overall. Despite several strong performances over the years, the Asian side is still aiming to reach the knockout stage for the first time in its history.
Under head coach Amir Ghalenoei, Iran secured qualification after a successful campaign in Asian qualifiers, sealing their place at the tournament with a draw against Uzbekistan in March 2025.
New Zealand return to the World Cup finals for the first time since 2010 and are making only their third appearance at the global event. The Oceania representatives booked their place with a convincing victory over New Caledonia in the regional qualifying final.
The All Whites will be looking to build on the positive memories of their 2010 campaign, when they remained unbeaten in the group stage with draws against Slovakia, Italy and Paraguay.
Iran arrive with a strong recent World Cup record, having earned group-stage victories at both the 2018 and 2022 tournaments. However, advancement to the knockout rounds has remained just out of reach.
New Zealand’s hopes are expected to rely heavily on captain Chris Wood, the country’s all-time leading goalscorer. The experienced forward was instrumental during qualification, delivering several standout performances to help his team secure a World Cup berth.
With valuable points at stake and both sides eager to make history, Monday’s encounter promises to be an important early test in Group G as the race for qualification to the next round begins.
