Lahore Plans Traffic Upgrade at Defence Mor to Ease Congestion

Authorities in Lahore are considering a major infrastructure upgrade at Defence Mor aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing congestion at one of the city’s busiest junctions.

The proposal follows inspections and consultations led by Chief Traffic Officer Syed Abdul Raheem Shirazi in coordination with relevant departments to address long-standing traffic management challenges in the area.

Under the proposed plan, the turning lane at Defence Mor may be widened from 22 feet to 33 feet. Officials say the redesign is expected to improve vehicle movement and increase the junction’s capacity significantly.

Current estimates suggest that around 6,000 vehicles pass through the intersection per hour. With the proposed changes, this figure could increase to approximately 9,000 vehicles per hour, according to traffic officials.

Authorities also expect improvements in average vehicle speed at the junction, which may rise from 15–20 km/h to 40–45 km/h once the project is completed.

The proposal has been reviewed in meetings involving the Traffic Engineering and Planning Agency (TEPA) and the Walton Cantonment Board, both of which are expected to contribute to the implementation process.

Officials stated that the upgrades are intended to reduce long traffic queues that often form during peak hours and improve travel conditions for daily commuters in the area.

The project is currently under consideration, with further planning and approvals required before construction work can begin.
