Manuel Neuer Hints 2026-27 Season Could Be His Last

Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer has suggested that the 2026-27 season is likely to be the final chapter of his illustrious football career.
Speaking during Bayern Munich’s pre-season training camp in southern Bavaria, the veteran goalkeeper said there is a strong possibility he will retire after the upcoming campaign.
“It certainly looks very likely I’m going to retire,” Neuer said.
Bayern Extension Delayed Retirement
The 40-year-old signed a one-year contract extension with Bayern Munich earlier this year. Neuer explained that the quality of the squad, coaching staff, and overall atmosphere at the club convinced him to continue playing for one more season.
He added that under different circumstances, he might have already ended his career.
Still Focused on Competing
Despite dealing with muscle injuries in recent seasons, Neuer remains an important part of Bayern Munich’s plans. He missed the German Cup final in May due to injury, but is expected to play a key role as the club aims to defend its Bundesliga title and compete for UEFA Champions League success.
The experienced goalkeeper also made it clear that he does not want the season to become a farewell tour.
“I’m not playing these matches just to say, ‘This is my last game,'” Neuer said.
A Legendary Bayern Career
Neuer joined Bayern Munich from Schalke in 2011 and has enjoyed one of the most decorated careers in football. During his time with the club, he has won:
- 13 Bundesliga titles
- 6 German Cups
- 2 UEFA Champions League trophies
If he retires at the end of the season, Neuer will bring to a close a career widely regarded as one of the greatest ever by a goalkeeper.
