Mbappe Reflects on France’s World Cup Exit After Semi-Final Defeat to Spain

France captain Kylian Mbappe has described his team’s FIFA World Cup semi-final defeat to Spain as a major disappointment, admitting that tactical and technical shortcomings ended Les Bleus’ hopes of reaching a third consecutive World Cup final.

France’s impressive tournament run came to an end with a 2-0 loss to Spain in Arlington, Texas. Mbappe, who enjoyed an outstanding campaign by scoring eight goals, acknowledged that his side failed to execute their game plan on one of football’s biggest stages.

Speaking after the match, the Real Madrid forward said France did not perform at the level required to compete in a World Cup semi-final.

“We didn’t play the match we wanted, whether tactically, technically, or overall,” Mbappe said. “When you don’t perform the way you should in a World Cup semi-final, you don’t win.”

France had aimed to apply high pressure on Spain to disrupt their possession-based style, but Mbappe admitted the plan did not work.

“Our objective was to press them high and stop them from controlling the tempo. Spain are one of the best teams at keeping possession, and we couldn’t prevent them from doing that,” he explained.

The French captain also highlighted Spain’s dominance in midfield as a decisive factor. He noted that France’s midfield was regularly outnumbered, allowing Spain to dictate play throughout the contest.

“Finding ourselves in a three-versus-two situation in midfield against a team like Spain made things extremely difficult,” he said. “That imbalance played a big role in the result.”

Despite the disappointment, Mbappe stressed that the team must accept the setback with professionalism and use it as motivation for the future.

“Our dream was to reach the final, make history, and give our supporters something special to celebrate,” he said. “It’s painful, but we have to accept the result with dignity.”

He added that the squad would take time to recover before focusing on future challenges.

“There is a lot of disappointment right now, and it’s difficult to express how everyone feels,” Mbappe said. “But football moves quickly. We have to recover, learn from this experience, and come back stronger.”

France’s World Cup journey ends in the semi-finals, while Spain advances to the final after an impressive display that showcased their control, composure, and tactical discipline.
