Medical Experts Call for Continued Support for Multiple Sclerosis Patients in Punjab

Medical experts and healthcare advocates have urged the Punjab government to ensure continued treatment support for patients living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) under existing healthcare programs.

The discussion comes ahead of the provincial budget, with experts emphasizing the importance of uninterrupted access to treatment for individuals affected by the chronic neurological condition.

Currently, many MS patients in Punjab receive healthcare assistance through the Sehat Card programme, which provides annual health insurance coverage of up to Rs. 400,000. Healthcare professionals have highlighted the need for sustained funding to help patients manage the long-term costs associated with the disease.

According to medical experts, treatment expenses for Multiple Sclerosis can be significant, with annual costs for some patients approaching Rs. 1 million. As a result, many families rely on government-supported healthcare programs to continue treatment.

Understanding Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic autoimmune disorder that affects the central nervous system. The condition can impact mobility, vision, coordination, and other neurological functions. It is most commonly diagnosed in adults between the ages of 20 and 40.

According to international health organizations, millions of people worldwide are living with MS. In Pakistan, medical professionals estimate that thousands of patients have been diagnosed with the condition, although comprehensive nationwide data remains limited.

Neurologists note that advances in modern treatment have improved disease management in recent years. Disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) can help slow disease progression and reduce the frequency of relapses, improving patients’ quality of life.

Importance of Continued Treatment

Healthcare specialists stress that consistent access to treatment is important for managing the condition effectively. They say treatment interruptions can make disease management more difficult and may affect long-term health outcomes.

Patient advocates have encouraged policymakers to consider the healthcare needs of MS patients during budget planning and to support programs that improve access to specialized treatment.

Government Response

A senior official of the Punjab Health Initiative Management Company has clarified that treatment for Multiple Sclerosis patients under the Sehat Sahulat Programme is not being suspended.

The official stated that the Punjab government intends to continue providing support for MS treatment and indicated that funding levels could be reviewed in the future based on available healthcare resources and budget allocations.

Healthcare experts and patient groups have welcomed the assurance and expressed hope that continued support will help improve access to treatment for individuals living with Multiple Sclerosis across Punjab.
