Modi Highlights Progress in US-India Trade Talks After Meeting With Trump

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said there has been significant progress in trade negotiations between India and the United States following discussions with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France.

The meeting marked the first in-person talks between the two leaders since their previous meeting in Washington in February 2025.

According to a statement issued by India’s foreign ministry, both leaders expressed satisfaction with the advancement of negotiations toward an interim bilateral trade agreement. They also directed officials to continue working toward a commercially meaningful deal as soon as possible.

Speaking to reporters, President Trump said the two countries were “very close” to reaching an agreement and praised the progress made during negotiations.

Trade discussions between Washington and New Delhi have continued over the past year, with both governments aiming to increase bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030. Several rounds of talks have focused on addressing market access issues, tariffs, and broader economic cooperation.

Further discussions are expected next week when US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer visits India for another round of negotiations.

India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal recently indicated that the first phase of a trade agreement is nearing completion, reflecting growing momentum in the talks.

During their meeting, the leaders also discussed regional and global economic developments. Modi highlighted the importance of stable supply chains and international cooperation to support economic growth and development.

He noted that disruptions affecting energy, food, and fertilizer supplies continue to impact many developing economies and emphasized the need for long-term solutions to strengthen global trade and economic resilience.

The meeting underscored the importance of the US-India partnership and ongoing efforts to deepen economic ties between the two countries.
