Pakistan Plans Real-Time Monitoring System for Fishing Boats

The federal government has approved a plan to introduce a Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) for fishing boats to improve maritime management, enhance safety, and support monitoring efforts in coastal waters.

Under the initiative, the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency will supervise the installation of the tracking devices. All eligible fishing vessels will be registered before being connected to the monitoring network.

According to official information, approximately 10,000 fishing boats operating in Sindh and Balochistan are expected to be included in the project. During the initial phase, around 8,000 boats from the two provinces will be equipped with the system.

The tracking devices will be installed on fishing vessels measuring 12 meters (39 feet) or longer. Authorities say these larger boats are typically used for extended fishing operations and long-distance travel at sea.

Officials stated that the government will cover the cost of the equipment, which is being manufactured locally. The system will enable real-time monitoring of vessel locations, helping authorities improve coordination and oversight in maritime areas.

Maritime experts noted that Vessel Monitoring Systems are widely used around the world to track vessel movement, speed, and direction through satellite-based technology. The system can also assist in managing fisheries resources and supporting maritime operations.

The initiative is expected to improve safety for fishermen by enabling faster response during emergencies. With the new system, authorities will be able to identify the location of a vessel more efficiently if assistance is required.

In addition, the project aims to strengthen regulatory compliance and support efforts to ensure safe and responsible fishing practices in Pakistan’s coastal waters.

Officials believe the introduction of modern tracking technology will contribute to improved maritime governance and help enhance safety standards across the fishing sector.
