PDMA Warns of Urban Flooding, Flash Flood Risks Across Punjab
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued a weather advisory, warning of possible urban flooding, flash floods, and landslides as the fourth spell of monsoon rains is expected to continue until August 5.
According to a PDMA spokesperson, water levels in most major rivers across Punjab remain within normal limits. The Chenab River barrages, Ravi River headworks, as well as the Jhelum and Sutlej rivers are currently flowing normally.
However, low-level flooding has been reported in the Indus River at Kalabagh, where inflow is recorded at 331,000 cusecs and outflow at 323,000 cusecs. River conditions at Tarbela, Chashma, and Taunsa remain stable, while the situation in the hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan is also under control.
The PDMA also reported low-level flooding in Nala Aik and Baein, while Nala Palkhu near Wazirabad is experiencing medium-level flooding.
PDMA Director General Saif Anwar Jappa said that additional rainfall in upper catchment areas could raise water levels in eastern rivers and connected streams, increasing the risk of flash floods in seasonal waterways.
The authority has warned of possible urban flooding in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Faisalabad, and Multan. Meanwhile, Murree, Galyat, and other hilly regions may face the risk of landslides due to continued rainfall.
Residents living near riverbanks and flood-prone areas have been advised to relocate to safer places if necessary and to follow instructions issued by local authorities.
The Punjab government has established flood relief camps in affected areas, where essential supplies, medical assistance, and other support services will be available for affected residents.
PDMA has also urged the public to avoid visiting rivers, canals, streams, and seasonal waterways during the ongoing monsoon spell. Parents are advised to closely supervise children and discourage swimming or recreational activities near water bodies to ensure their safety.
