Punjab Begins Inspection of E-Taxi Scheme to Ensure Compliance
The Punjab government has launched an inspection campaign to review the use of vehicles distributed under its electric taxi (E-Taxi) scheme, following reports that some beneficiaries are not operating them as intended.
According to the Punjab Transport Department, authorities found that a number of recipients are using the subsidized electric vehicles for personal purposes instead of providing public transport services. Officials also reported that some vehicle owners have removed the government-approved branding, which is a requirement under the scheme.
Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan said the department maintains records of all beneficiaries and will verify whether the vehicles are being used in accordance with the program’s terms and conditions.
He added that action may be taken against individuals found in violation of the scheme, including cases where vehicles intended for commercial taxi services are being used exclusively for private purposes.
The Punjab government introduced the E-Taxi scheme to encourage environmentally friendly transportation while improving public taxi services across the province.
Under the initiative, the government allocated Rs. 4 billion in subsidies and distributed around 1,100 electric taxis through an interest-free installment plan.
Officials said the inspection process is aimed at ensuring the program achieves its objectives of expanding eco-friendly transport services and providing better travel options for the public.
