Punjab Launches Digital Birth and Death Registration System
The Punjab Local Government and Community Development Department has introduced a digital birth and death registration system under newly notified rules aimed at making the registration process faster and more convenient for citizens.
The updated system will become fully operational on August 1 and will allow registrations through an online platform.
Free Registration for Seven Years
Under the new rules, citizens can register births and deaths free of charge for up to seven years from the date of occurrence.
During this period, computerized birth and death certificates will also be issued without any registration fee.
Previous Fees and Court Requirement Removed
The department has abolished all registration fees for cases reported within seven years.
In addition, the previous requirement of obtaining a court decree for delayed registration has been removed, making the process simpler and more accessible for the public.
Approval Process Under the New Rules
The revised system assigns registration responsibilities based on the age of the case:
- Union Council Secretary: Authorized to register births of children up to one year of age.
- Assistant Director: Responsible for approving registrations for children older than one year and up to seven years of age.
- Deputy Director: Will handle registration cases involving individuals older than seven years.
Digital Initiative to Improve Public Services
The digitized registration system is intended to modernize public record management, reduce paperwork, and make birth and death registration more efficient across Punjab.
Officials expect the online platform to improve accessibility while helping citizens obtain official registration documents through a more streamlined process.
