Punjab Plans to Expand Electric Bus Fleet to 1,500 Vehicles Across the Province

The Punjab government is continuing to expand its electric public transport network, with plans to increase the province’s fleet to 1,500 electric buses in the coming phases. The initiative is aimed at improving public transportation while promoting environmentally friendly and modern travel options.

At present, around 400 electric buses are operating across 18 districts of Punjab. The government has announced further expansion, with additional buses expected to be introduced in several cities and towns over the coming months.

Electric Bus Services Operating in More Districts

Electric bus services have recently started on 13 routes across the districts of Khanewal, Khushab, Bhakkar, Attock, Mandi Bahauddin and Hafizabad.

Khushab currently has 15 electric buses in service, while Khanewal, Bhakkar, Attock, Mandi Bahauddin and Hafizabad each have nine buses operating on selected routes.

The services connect major urban areas with surrounding towns to provide more convenient and reliable transportation for daily commuters.

More Districts to Receive Electric Buses

The provincial government plans to extend the electric bus network to 14 additional districts by the end of July 2026.

According to the plan:

  • Chiniot, Layyah, Okara and Sialkot will each receive 10 electric buses.
  • Lahore, Gujranwala and Multan will receive 12 buses each.
  • Murree, Gujrat and Sheikhupura are expected to receive 11 buses each.
  • Vehari, Kasur, Lodhran, Nankana Sahib and Narowal are also scheduled to receive 11 buses each.

Officials have also indicated that an additional 488 electric buses are expected to arrive in Pakistan by the end of August 2026. After completing the required preparations, these vehicles will gradually become operational across various districts.

Gujrat Preparing to Launch Electric Bus Service

Gujrat is among the districts preparing to introduce electric bus services. A fleet of 11 buses has already arrived, while work continues on completing the charging station at the General Bus Stand on Old GT Road.

Provincial authorities have instructed the Punjab Transport Company and the district administration to complete the remaining arrangements so that the service can begin by July 15, 2026.

Initially, the buses are expected to operate on routes connecting Gujrat with Lalamusa, Jalalpur Jattan, Mungowal and Daulat Nagar. Around 60 bus stops have already been completed along these routes.

Proposal for Two Additional Routes

The Gujrat district administration has also proposed introducing electric bus services on two more routes connecting Gujrat with Dinga and Langay.

The proposal has been forwarded to the Punjab government for approval. If approved, new bus stops will be developed along both routes to improve public transport access for residents.

Officials said surveys for the proposed routes have already been completed, while the Punjab Transport Company will review the plan before granting final approval.

Focus on Sustainable Public Transport

The expansion of electric buses reflects the provincial government’s broader effort to modernize public transportation while reducing vehicle emissions. As more buses become operational and supporting infrastructure is completed, commuters in additional districts are expected to benefit from cleaner, quieter and more efficient public transport services.
