Punjab Reduces Traffic Fines Under New Motor Vehicle Law Amendments

The Punjab Assembly has approved amendments to reduce traffic fines across the province, providing relief to motorists. The revised rules will come into effect after final approval from the Governor of Punjab.

The legislation, titled the Provincial Motor Vehicles (Fourth Amendment) Ordinance 2025, was passed with majority support following review by the relevant standing committee.

Reduced Penalties for Common Vehicles

Under the updated law, fines for motorcycles have been significantly reduced. Some penalties have been lowered from Rs2,000 to Rs1,000, while the maximum fine has been capped at Rs2,000.

Rickshaw drivers will also benefit, with certain fines reduced from Rs3,000 to Rs1,000. More serious violations for rickshaws will now carry a maximum penalty of Rs2,000.

For cars and jeeps, fines for minor offences have been reduced from Rs5,000 to Rs2,000, while penalties for serious violations remain unchanged at Rs5,000.

Heavy and Commercial Vehicles

For larger vehicles, including those with engine capacity above 2000cc, fines have been reduced from Rs20,000 to Rs10,000, with a minimum penalty set at Rs2,000.

Transport operators will also see reductions. Fines for Mazda trucks, coasters, and light passenger vans have been lowered from Rs20,000 to Rs7,000.

Similarly, penalties for heavy vehicles such as buses and trucks have been reduced from Rs20,000 to Rs10,000.

Speeding Fines Unchanged

Authorities confirmed that speeding fines will remain unchanged across all vehicle categories to ensure road safety standards are maintained.

Policy Objective

Officials said the amendments aim to balance enforcement of traffic laws with public relief, while maintaining strict penalties for serious violations.

The revised framework is expected to ease financial pressure on motorists while continuing to promote road discipline across the province.
