Punjab to Launch Electric Bus Service in More South Punjab Districts
The Punjab government is preparing to expand its electric bus network to additional districts, with Kot Addu and Taunsa Sharif among the latest areas set to receive the service.
The update was shared during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to review progress on public transport and mass transit projects across the province.
Officials briefed the meeting on the ongoing rollout of electric buses and the development of mass transit systems in Faisalabad and Gujranwala.
As part of the province’s clean transportation initiative, authorities plan to convert 400 existing buses into electric vehicles. In addition, 189 new electric buses are ready for a soft launch in multiple districts.
The government is also expecting the arrival of 488 additional electric buses, which are scheduled to be shipped from China on July 20, further expanding the fleet.
During the meeting, the chief minister directed officials to launch electric bus services as soon as possible in Kot Addu, Talagang, and Taunsa Sharif. She also instructed the relevant departments to begin operations in Vehari and Lodhran.
Maryam Nawaz further directed authorities to increase the number of electric buses allocated to Vehari, Lodhran, and Nankana Sahib, stating that districts with fewer than 15 buses should receive at least that number to improve public transport availability.
The meeting also reviewed progress on the Gujranwala Mass Transit Project, where approval was given for an additional station on the 19.5-kilometre route, increasing the total number of planned stations to 25.
