Rare Blue Micromoon to Light Up the Sky This Weekend

Skywatchers are expected to witness a rare astronomical event this weekend as a “blue micromoon” appears in the night sky, offering a unique celestial display for observers around the world.

A blue moon occurs when two full moons appear in a single calendar month, a phenomenon that happens roughly every two to three years. The first full moon of the month was observed on May 1, making the upcoming full moon the second in the same month.

This particular full moon is also classified as a micromoon because it will be at a greater distance from Earth than usual due to the shape of the moon’s orbit. At approximately 252,360 miles (406,135 kilometers) away, it will appear slightly smaller and dimmer than an average full moon.

Astronomers note that the difference in size and brightness is subtle and may not be easily noticeable to the naked eye. The micromoon is considered the opposite of a supermoon, which occurs when the moon is closer to Earth and appears larger and brighter.

Adding to the spectacle, the bright star Antares will appear near the moon in the night sky, creating a visually striking combination for stargazers.

Experts say the event will be visible across many regions, with particularly favorable viewing conditions expected in parts of the Southern Hemisphere and across the Pacific.

Astronomy enthusiasts are encouraged to observe the phenomenon in clear skies for the best viewing experience.
