Rising Temperatures May Influence FIFA World Cup 2026 Match Conditions, Study Finds
A recent analysis suggests that warmer weather conditions could play an important role during the FIFA World Cup 2026, with many matches expected to be held in temperatures that may influence player performance.
The tournament, scheduled to begin on June 11, 2026, will feature 48 teams competing across 16 host cities in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
According to research conducted by Climate Central, 97 of the tournament’s 104 matches could experience temperatures above 28°C, a level that previous studies have associated with changes in athletic performance.
The analysis compared current climate conditions with a theoretical climate unaffected by human-driven warming. Researchers found that nearly half of the scheduled matches have at least a 50 percent probability of being played in temperatures that may affect on-field performance.
Scientists note that higher temperatures can influence several aspects of football, including player movement, recovery times, and overall match intensity. These conditions may also encourage teams to adjust tactics and player management strategies during games.
Several host cities in Mexico and the United States are expected to experience the highest likelihood of warmer match conditions. Guadalajara and Miami were highlighted among the venues where elevated temperatures may be most noticeable during the group stage.
The study also examined the World Cup final, scheduled for July 19 in New Jersey, and found a moderate possibility of warmer playing conditions compared to historical averages.
Sports and climate experts say that adapting to changing weather patterns is becoming increasingly important for major international sporting events. Measures such as evening kickoffs, hydration breaks, and heat-monitoring protocols are expected to help support player wellbeing throughout the tournament.
Tournament organizers have confirmed that mandatory hydration breaks will be available during matches, while additional weather-related procedures may be implemented when necessary.
Although several stadiums feature advanced climate-control systems, many venues remain open-air facilities, making weather conditions an important factor for players, officials, and spectators alike.
Experts believe that ongoing planning and heat-management strategies will play a key role in ensuring a safe and competitive environment during the FIFA World Cup 2026.
