Samsung Workers Rally in South Korea Over Pay Dispute and Bonus Demands

Thousands of workers at Samsung Electronics staged a large rally at the company’s chip manufacturing complex in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, demanding higher bonuses and improved compensation structures.

The protest comes amid rising profits in the global semiconductor industry, driven largely by growing demand for artificial intelligence and data center infrastructure.

Large Worker Protest

Union representatives said approximately 40,000 members took part in the demonstration, although official police estimates were not immediately released. Workers gathered at the factory site under heavy security, holding banners and calling for greater transparency in bonus distribution and the removal of limits on performance-based payouts.

Industry Profit Growth

The rally coincided with strong financial results across the semiconductor sector. Rival company SK Hynix recently reported record quarterly revenue and operating profit, citing increased global demand for memory chips used in AI systems and data centers.

Samsung Electronics also projected strong earnings for the first quarter, reflecting continued growth in the chip industry alongside its broader consumer electronics and smartphone business.

Growing Tensions Over Compensation

Despite strong industry performance, workers argue that compensation structures have not kept pace with rising profits. The union has called for changes in how bonuses are calculated and distributed.

Some workers also warned of a potential strike if their demands are not addressed through negotiations.

Background

Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix together account for a significant share of global memory chip production, making South Korea a key player in the semiconductor supply chain.

The situation highlights ongoing labor tensions in the tech manufacturing sector as companies benefit from rapid growth in artificial intelligence-related demand.
