Saudi Arabia Introduces New Work Permit Requirement for Premium Residency Holders
RIYADH — Saudi Arabia has introduced a new requirement for Premium Residency holders, who will now need to obtain a dedicated work permit through the Kingdom’s Qiwa digital labour platform for a fee of SR100.
The update was issued via Qiwa, the official platform operated by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development, and has been reported by local media.
Under the new rule, Premium Residency holders must secure the work permit separately before beginning employment in the Kingdom.
Digital Labour System Updates
Qiwa has also outlined several updates to its labour procedures, including rules related to business subscriptions, training contracts, resignation requests, and visa services.
Training contracts under the Tamheer programme can now be processed electronically through the platform. However, authorities clarified that these contracts will not be counted toward Saudization targets or compliance requirements linked to employment documentation.
The platform also confirmed that service payments can be made through multiple channels, including bank cards, SADAD payment systems, and the Qiwa digital wallet.
Changes to Employment and Visa Rules
According to Qiwa, employees may withdraw a resignation request within seven days, provided the employer has not accepted it or delayed a decision within that period. Notice periods will continue to depend on individual employment contracts.
Officials further clarified that visa details cannot be changed after issuance. In case of incorrect information, the visa must be cancelled and reissued with corrected data.
The updated guidelines are particularly relevant for expatriates, including Pakistani workers in Saudi Arabia, especially those using Premium Residency arrangements or managing employment through the Kingdom’s digital labour system.
