Skyroot Aerospace Successfully Launches India’s First Private Orbital Rocket

Sriharikota, India: Indian space technology company Skyroot Aerospace has successfully launched Vikram-1, the country’s first privately developed orbital rocket, marking a significant milestone for India’s growing private space industry.

The rocket lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota on Saturday as part of its maiden orbital mission, named Mission Aagaman.

Successful Orbital Mission

According to the company, Vikram-1 successfully placed its payload into a 450-kilometre low-Earth orbit approximately 15 minutes after launch.

The mission carried multiple customer payloads and technology demonstration experiments designed to evaluate the rocket’s performance during its first orbital flight.

The launch experienced a brief delay before liftoff but proceeded successfully after the countdown resumed.

Mission Objectives

Skyroot Aerospace said the primary goal of Mission Aagaman was to validate the rocket’s key systems, including:

  • Propulsion technology
  • Guidance and navigation systems
  • Flight control systems
  • Avionics and telemetry
  • Overall launch vehicle performance

The company described the mission as a successful test flight and said additional demonstration missions are expected before beginning regular commercial launch operations.

About Vikram-1

Standing approximately 22 meters tall, the Vikram-1 launch vehicle is designed to carry payloads of up to 350 kilograms into low-Earth orbit.

The rocket features:

  • Three solid-fuel propulsion stages
  • A liquid-fuel orbital adjustment module
  • A 3D-printed engine used for orbital operations

It also carried several technology demonstration payloads and research experiments from Indian and international organizations.

Growth of India’s Private Space Industry

Founded in 2018, Skyroot Aerospace has become one of India’s leading private space companies following the country’s decision to open the space sector to private participation in 2020.

The successful launch highlights the expanding role of private companies in India’s space program and reflects growing investment in commercial space technology.

Looking Ahead

The Indian government aims to significantly expand the country’s presence in the global space economy over the coming years by encouraging private companies to develop launch vehicles, satellites, and space-related services.

The successful debut of Vikram-1 represents an important step toward future commercial missions and continued growth in India’s space technology sector.
