WhatsApp to Introduce Usernames for Improved Privacy
WhatsApp has announced that it will introduce usernames, allowing people to connect with others without sharing their phone numbers.
The upcoming feature is designed to provide users with greater privacy by reducing the need to disclose their mobile numbers when starting new conversations or joining group chats.
According to WhatsApp, users will be able to choose a unique username that others can use to contact them. The company said there will be no public directory or username suggestions, meaning people will need to know a user’s exact username before they can initiate contact.
The new system is expected to enhance privacy in situations such as joining large group chats or communicating with a business or individual for the first time, where phone numbers are currently visible.
WhatsApp noted that, because the platform has billions of users worldwide, some usernames may already be taken. As a result, not everyone may be able to select their preferred username.
The company plans to roll out the username feature gradually over the coming months and will notify users when it becomes available in their region.
In addition, creators, businesses, and organizations will be able to reserve usernames that match their existing identities on other Meta-owned platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, helping maintain a consistent online presence across services.
The update is part of WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to introduce new privacy features while making it easier for users to connect securely on the platform.
