World braves ‘hottest day’ ever recorded on July 21

Heatwaves Scorch United States, Europe, and Russia Amid Record-Breaking Global Temperatures

Large swathes of the United States, Europe, and Russia have been scorched by heatwaves over the past week, highlighting the impact of climate change. According to preliminary data from the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service, the world experienced its hottest day ever recorded on Sunday, July 21.

Record-Breaking Temperatures

The global average surface air temperature on Sunday reached 17.09°C (62.76°F), slightly surpassing the previous record of 17.08°C (62.74°F) set last July. This new record marks a significant milestone, confirming the continuing trend of rising global temperatures.

Climate Change Impact

Heatwaves driven by climate change have affected vast regions, including the United States, Europe, and Russia. The Copernicus Climate Change Service confirmed to Reuters that the record daily temperature average set last year has indeed been broken. Their records, which date back to 1940, show an alarming increase in global temperatures.

Ongoing Trend

In 2022, the world saw four consecutive days of record-breaking temperatures from July 3 to July 6. This year, every month since June 2023 has been the hottest on record for that month compared to previous years, underscoring the accelerating impact of climate change.

Future Outlook

Scientists warn that 2024 could potentially surpass 2023 as the hottest year on record. The combination of climate change and the El Niño weather phenomenon, which ended in April, has contributed to this year’s unprecedented heat levels.

As the planet continues to experience extreme temperatures, the urgency for addressing climate change and reducing fossil fuel emissions becomes ever more critical.
