England Stage Stunning Comeback in 10-Goal Thriller Against Germany at U-19 Euros

Bucharest, June 18, 2025 – In a breathtaking display of resilience and attacking football, England’s U-19 team pulled off a remarkable second-half comeback to draw 5-5 with Germany at the UEFA Under-19 European Championship—setting a new record as the highest-scoring game in the tournament’s history.

⚽ Early Goals Set a Rapid Pace

The Group B clash at the Stadionul Arcul de Triumf started with high intensity. Barcelona’s Noah Darvic opened the scoring for Germany within the first seven minutes. Germany extended their lead with a goal from Said El Mala just past the 30-minute mark.

England briefly responded when Fulham’s Joshua King netted a powerful strike from 12 yards out, following a well-placed cross from Jayden Meghoma.

However, Germany soon took full control, scoring three quick goals through Max Moerstedt, Leopold Wurm, and a second from El Mala, stretching the lead to 5-1 by the 49th minute.

🔁 Second-Half Turnaround

With the game seemingly out of reach, England launched an extraordinary comeback.

  • Manchester United’s Ethan Wheatley opened the floodgates in the 52nd minute, capitalizing on a rebound after Zach Abbott’s header was mishandled by the German goalkeeper.

  • Just minutes later, Reiss-Alexander Russell-Denny of Tottenham Hotspur slotted home to make it 5-3.

  • On the hour mark, Abbott got on the scoresheet himself, heading in from a corner to further close the gap.

The stunning equalizer came in the 63rd minute when Jesse Derry, son of former Crystal Palace captain Shaun Derry, pounced on another goalkeeping error to complete the comeback.

🧤 Late Drama and Missed Winner

Arsenal goalkeeper Tommy Setford made a crucial save to deny Germany a late winner from a Paris Brunner header. In the dying moments, Caleb Kporha of Crystal Palace surged into the box with a chance to snatch victory for England but sent his shot just over the bar.

🏆 A Night to Remember

This unforgettable 10-goal encounter not only highlighted the depth of young talent in European football but also reinforced England’s reputation for producing spirited performances on the big stage.

With the result, England remains in contention in Group B, and fans can expect more fireworks as the tournament progresses.
