England Drop Zak Crawley for First Test Against New Zealand
England have dropped opening batter Zak Crawley from their squad for the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s, as the team continues its rebuilding phase following a disappointing Ashes series in Australia.
The England selectors have named a 15-member squad that includes several new faces, with Durham batter Emilio Gay among the uncapped players expected to strengthen the top order.
Crawley struggled for form during the recent Ashes series, scoring 273 runs in 10 innings at an average of 27.30, and has continued to face challenges in county cricket this season.
Durham’s Emilio Gay, along with Hampshire fast bowler Sonny Baker and Somerset wicketkeeper-batter James Rew, have been included in the squad and could make their Test debuts.
The squad also sees the return of fast bowler Ollie Robinson after a long absence, while leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed has also been recalled as England look to rebuild their bowling attack.
England selectors have made additional changes following the Ashes defeat, with Ollie Pope and Will Jacks both missing out on selection this time.
The selectors described the squad as a balanced mix of experienced players and emerging talent, highlighting strong domestic performances as a key factor in selection decisions.
Former Australia batter Marcus North has also been appointed as England’s new national selector, bringing experience from both international cricket and county coaching.
England will begin their three-match Test series against New Zealand at Lord’s on June 4, with the squad reflecting a shift toward long-term team rebuilding and development.
