Muharram 1448 AH Expected to Begin in Pakistan Around June 17

Muharram-ul-Haram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, is expected to begin in Pakistan on June 17, 2026, according to astronomical projections released by the Ruet-e-Hilal Research Council.

Moon Sighting Forecast

The council’s Secretary General, Khalid Ejaz Mufti, stated that the new moon is expected to be born on June 15 at 7:54 am Pakistan Standard Time.

However, experts note that the age of the crescent at sunset on the same day will be less than 12 hours across the country, making it difficult to be sighted with the naked eye.

Visibility Conditions

Although the moon is expected to remain visible above the horizon for a short period after sunset—around 37 minutes in Karachi and 42 minutes in Peshawar—its young age may limit visibility.

The council further explained that, even under clear weather conditions and with optical instruments, the crescent is unlikely to be sighted on the evening of June 15.

Expected Start of Islamic Month

Based on these calculations, Zil Hajj 1447 AH is expected to complete 30 days, making June 17, 2026, the likely first day of Muharram 1448 AH.

Official Announcement

The final confirmation regarding the sighting of the Muharram crescent and the start of the new Islamic year will be made by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee after official moon sighting observations across the country.
