NYCFC Teammates Set to Face Off in Key FIFA World Cup Group D Match
New York City FC teammates Matt Freese, Aiden O’Neill, and Kai Trewin are preparing for a unique World Cup encounter as the United States and Australia meet in a crucial Group D fixture on Friday in Seattle.
The three players have shared the field at club level in Major League Soccer, but will now represent opposing national teams on one of football’s biggest stages.
Australian midfielder Aiden O’Neill, who joined NYCFC during the 2025 MLS season, said he is looking forward to competing against his club teammate Matt Freese, the United States goalkeeper.
Both players played important roles in their countries’ opening World Cup victories. O’Neill helped Australia secure a 2-0 win over Turkey, while Freese impressed in his World Cup debut as the United States defeated Paraguay.
Australia head coach Tony Popovic entrusted O’Neill with a key midfield role in the opening match, while Freese earned the starting position for the U.S. team in a strong first appearance at the tournament.
Meanwhile, Australian defender Kai Trewin, another NYCFC player, is also part of the Socceroos squad. Although he did not feature in the opening match, he remains available as Australia seeks another positive result.
The upcoming clash could have a major impact on the Group D standings, with both teams aiming to strengthen their chances of progressing to the knockout stage.
At club level, Freese, O’Neill, and Trewin have contributed to NYCFC’s recent success in Major League Soccer. Their international meeting now adds another chapter to a unique sporting connection as teammates become rivals on the World Cup stage.
