Cape Verde continued its memorable FIFA World Cup debut by securing a place in the Round of 16 after playing out a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia on Friday.
The result, combined with Spain’s 1-0 victory over Uruguay, was enough for Cape Verde to finish second in Group H and earn a knockout-stage meeting with defending champions Argentina on July 3 in Miami.
Ranked 67th in the world before the tournament, Cape Verde has exceeded expectations by remaining unbeaten throughout the group stage. The island nation collected three draws, including impressive performances against European champions Spain and two-time world champions Uruguay.
Spain topped the group with seven points, while Cape Verde finished second with three. Uruguay and Saudi Arabia were eliminated after both ended the group stage with two points.
Despite making several changes to his starting lineup, head coach Bubista kept faith in experienced goalkeeper Vozinha, whose performances have been crucial throughout the tournament. The veteran shot-stopper once again played an important role as Cape Verde secured the point it needed to progress.
Cape Verde created several promising opportunities during the match, with Jamiro Monteiro and Kevin Pina both coming close after the break. Laros Duarte also threatened late in the game, but Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais produced an important save to keep the score level.
Saudi Arabia needed a victory to stay in contention but struggled to create clear scoring chances. Their task became even more difficult after defender Hassan Al-Tambakti was forced off with an injury during the first half.
With qualification secured, Cape Verde now prepares for one of the biggest matches in its football history against Lionel Messi’s Argentina. The debutants will look to continue their remarkable World Cup journey against the reigning champions in the Round of 16.
