Belgium Thrash New Zealand 5-1 to Top Group G and Reach World Cup Knockout Stage
Report: Imran Sohail
Belgium delivered an impressive attacking display to defeat New Zealand 5-1 on Friday, securing first place in Group G and a spot in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage.
After a slow start to the tournament, Belgium finally found its scoring touch. Leandro Trossard led the way with two goals, while Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Saelemaekers also found the back of the net in a dominant performance.
The victory, combined with Egypt’s 1-1 draw against Iran, allowed Belgium to finish at the top of the group standings. The Red Devils will now face a third-place qualifier in the Round of 16 on Wednesday in Seattle.
Belgium had entered the final group match under pressure after opening its campaign with a 1-1 draw against Egypt before being held to a goalless draw by Iran. The five-goal performance marked a significant turnaround at a crucial stage of the competition.
Speaking after the match, Trossard said the team had created opportunities in the earlier games but failed to convert them.
“We created chances in the first two matches, but this time we were able to finish them. Scoring goals gives the team confidence, and we’re delighted to qualify as group winners,” he said.
The result also represents a positive response for Belgium after its disappointing group-stage exit at the 2022 World Cup. With experienced players such as De Bruyne and Lukaku leading the squad, Belgium will now look to carry its momentum into the knockout rounds.
