Japan Names Coaching Staff for U-15 Baseball World Cup Title Defense

Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail

Japan has officially announced its coaching staff for the VII WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup as preparations begin for the tournament scheduled to take place in Mérida, Mexico, from September 25 to October 4, 2026.

Newly appointed manager Tsuyoshi Omori will lead the defending champions, assisted by coaches Takanobu Wakabayashi, Shun Kasai, and Shota Ito.

The national team’s preparation is already underway with the first of two final player selection trials held on June 20 at Josai University Baseball Ground in Saitama. Fifteen young players earned invitations after advancing through the Samurai Japan U-15 National Team Digital Challenge, while the remaining shortlisted athletes are set to participate in the second and final trial on June 27.

The selection camp featured physical fitness tests, defensive drills, batting practice, pitching evaluations, and game-situation exercises. Players also attended educational sessions with coaches and completed the Samurai Japan Baseball Health Check, a medical screening program that evaluates shoulder, elbow, and overall physical condition to reduce injury risks.

Japan enters the 2026 tournament with confidence after winning its first-ever U-15 Baseball World Cup title in 2024.

Manager Omori said watching players perform in person provided valuable insight beyond the initial video evaluations.

He explained that while the coaching staff had already reviewed each player’s abilities through video footage, the live sessions offered a better understanding of their overall performance and potential. Omori also emphasized that the selection process will consider character, teamwork, and personal development in addition to baseball skills.

Following the second selection trial, the coaching staff will finalize the 18-player squad that will represent Japan at the World Cup.

At the 2026 WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup, Japan will compete in Group A alongside Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Germany, Mexico, and South Africa. Group B includes Australia, Chinese Taipei, Czechia, Nicaragua, the United States, and Venezuela.
