VANCOUVER: Algerian football star Riyad Mahrez has announced his retirement from international football following Algeria’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 35-year-old forward made the announcement after Algeria’s 2-0 defeat to Switzerland national football team in the Round of 32, bringing an end to an international career that spanned more than a decade.

Mahrez Reflects on His International Journey

Speaking after the match, Mahrez expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent his country throughout his career.

“There were good times and difficult times as well. That’s part of a career. Representing Algeria has been a dream of mine ever since I was young. It has been an immense honor and a great source of pride.”

He added that it was now time for the next generation of Algerian players to take the team forward.

As he left the field following his final international appearance, Mahrez acknowledged supporters by giving a thumbs-up, placing his hand over his heart, and waving to the fans.

A Remarkable International Career

Mahrez retires as one of Algeria’s most accomplished footballers. During his international career, he made 119 appearances and scored 40 goals, ranking second in the country’s history in both categories.

One of the biggest highlights of his international career came in 2019, when he helped Algeria win the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Outstanding Club Success

At club level, Mahrez has enjoyed a highly successful career. He famously helped Leicester City F.C. win a historic Premier League title before joining Manchester City F.C., where he won four additional Premier League championships and lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy.

Mahrez currently plays for Al-Ahli Saudi FC, where he continues his professional club career.

His retirement marks the end of an era for Algerian football, with Mahrez leaving behind a legacy as one of the country’s most successful and influential players.
