Super Typhoon Bavi Causes Widespread Damage Across Guam and Northern Mariana Islands

Super Typhoon Bavi swept across the U.S. Pacific territories of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands on Monday, bringing destructive winds, heavy rainfall and dangerous coastal conditions as authorities assessed damage and urged residents to remain indoors.

Officials reported significant damage on the island of Rota, while emergency crews continued monitoring conditions across the region.

Powerful Storm Brings Extreme Weather

According to weather officials, Super Typhoon Bavi reached wind speeds comparable to a Category 5 hurricane, with sustained winds of up to 180 mph (290 km/h) as it moved across Rota before gradually tracking westward.

Although the center of the storm began moving away later in the day, strong winds, heavy rain and rough seas continued to affect several islands.

Authorities warned residents to remain in safe shelters until weather conditions improved.

Reports of Damage on Rota

Local officials in Rota said early reports indicated significant damage to homes and infrastructure, although the full extent could not be confirmed immediately because communication services were disrupted.

Some mobile phone networks were affected after communication equipment was damaged, making it difficult for emergency teams to gather complete information.

Officials also reported localized flooding and damage caused by strong winds.

Guam and Nearby Islands Remain Under Alert

Residents in Guam were warned about the risk of flash flooding as heavy rainfall continued throughout the day.

Forecasters predicted between 8 and 12 inches of rain in some areas, increasing the possibility of flooding in low-lying locations.

Strong winds also affected parts of Tinian and Saipan, where authorities advised people to remain indoors until conditions became safer.Super Typhoon Mawar leaves 115 Taiwanese stranded in Guam

Residents Face Power Outages

Many residents experienced electricity outages as the storm passed through the region.

Some households had only recently regained power following an earlier storm and expressed concern about additional recovery efforts.

Local businesses also took precautionary measures by boarding up windows and temporarily closing operations before the typhoon arrived.

Emergency Response Continues

Emergency management agencies continue to assess damage and restore essential services as weather conditions gradually improve.

Warmer Oceans May Strengthen Tropical Storms

Climate experts note that warmer ocean temperatures can contribute to stronger tropical storms by providing additional energy and moisture.

Weather agencies have also indicated that developing El Niño conditions in the Pacific could influence tropical weather patterns during the current season, potentially increasing storm activity in some regions.

Officials will continue monitoring Super Typhoon Bavi as it moves away from the islands while recovery efforts begin across affected communities.
