Trump Discusses Ukraine Conflict with Putin and Zelensky Ahead of NATO Summit

U.S. President Donald Trump held separate telephone conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as diplomatic efforts to address the conflict in Ukraine continued ahead of the upcoming NATO summit.

According to Russian officials, Trump’s conversation with Putin lasted around 90 minutes and focused on the ongoing war as well as possible diplomatic initiatives.

Trump Expresses Support for Diplomatic Efforts

Kremlin officials said President Trump reiterated his willingness to support efforts aimed at finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov described the discussion as constructive and said both leaders exchanged views on the current situation and the prospects for future negotiations.

The conversation took place ahead of the NATO summit scheduled to be held in Türkiye, where the conflict in Ukraine is expected to remain a key topic of discussion.

Zelensky Also Holds Call with Trump

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that he also spoke with President Trump.

In a statement, Zelensky described the discussion as positive and said the two leaders talked about the situation along the front line and the importance of continued diplomatic engagement.

He added that further discussions are expected during the upcoming NATO summit.

Differing Positions on the Conflict

Russia and Ukraine continue to maintain different positions regarding the conditions for any future peace agreement.

Russian officials said Moscow continues to support a political and diplomatic solution while maintaining its stated objectives.

Ukraine has consistently said that any settlement must respect its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and Ukrainian officials continue to advocate for international support in efforts to end the conflict.

Situation on the Front Line

Russian authorities stated that their forces had made further advances in eastern Ukraine, including claims regarding control of areas in the Donetsk region.

Ukrainian officials disputed those claims, saying their forces continue to hold key positions in the area.

Independent verification of battlefield claims from either side remains difficult during active military operations.

Diplomatic Contacts Continue

Russian officials also said discussions touched on broader international issues, including developments in the Middle East.

According to the Kremlin, President Putin expressed hope that ongoing diplomatic efforts could help reduce tensions in multiple regions.

As international leaders prepare to meet at the NATO summit, diplomatic engagement between the United States, Russia and Ukraine is expected to remain an important focus alongside developments on the ground.
